What it means
The common name for Coffea canephora, one of the two dominant commercial species. It tends to contain more caffeine than arabica and is often associated with earthy, woody, or dark chocolate flavour patterns. It plays a major role in espresso blends for crema, body, and cost structure. Much of the contempt it receives is earned at low quality, but good robusta deserves more precision than reflexive dismissal.

Each one pushes this into the cup, compares it, or helps you act on it.
The fruit behind the bean
Varietal
Species sets the ceiling, varietal sharpens the picture.
Use varietal information as one of the strongest clues about a coffee, but never as the whole explanation.
How coffee gets bought
Origin
Then see where the coffee was grown.
Read origin labels with curiosity. The real detail comes from farm, varietal, process, and roast.

Specialty Coffee
Species matters differently depending on the market the coffee enters.
Treat specialty as a quality ambition that still needs to be proven in the cup.
The fruit behind the bean
Coffee Cherry
Step back to the fruit itself when the plant story needs context.
Remember the cherry when reading tasting notes. Fruit-forward coffees make more sense once you remember coffee began as fruit.
