Coffee glossary
Varietal
The fruit behind the bean
What it means
A distinct cultivated type within a coffee species. Names like Gesha, SL-28, Pacamara, and Typica belong here. Varietals affect flavour potential, yield, disease resistance, and altitude adaptation, as well as how buyers think about desirability and rarity. Varietal matters, but it interacts with climate, soil, process, and roast rather than acting alone.

Where this leads
Each one pushes this into the cup, compares it, or helps you act on it.
Names that shape expectations
Gesha
Move from the category to one of its most discussed examples.
When evaluating Gesha, pay attention to whether the cup earns the hype rather than assuming the label did the work.
Names that shape expectations
SL-28
Then compare it with a varietal that carries a very different cup reputation.
Use varietal names like SL-28 as clues, not guarantees. Growing and processing still decide the outcome.
How coffee gets bought
Origin
Varietal only becomes real once it is grown somewhere.
Read origin labels with curiosity. The real detail comes from farm, varietal, process, and roast.
Before roasting
Arabica
Step back out to the species level when you need the bigger frame.
Read arabica as a clue, not a verdict. Species matters, but origin, varietal, processing, and roast still decide the cup.
