Parts that change the shot

What it means

The brew assembly where the portafilter locks in and hot water is delivered to the coffee. Temperature stability and clean water delivery begin here. A dirty or poorly heated group undermines shot consistency even when puck prep is sound.

Where this leads

Each one pushes this into the cup, compares it, or helps you act on it.

Before the water hits

Puck

Hardware matters because it shapes the brew environment.

Think of the puck as the extraction environment, not just the spent material left after the shot.

Problems that show up later

Backflushing

Parts stay useful only when they stay clean.

Follow the maker's cleaning schedule and rinse thoroughly after detergent cycles.

How the shot starts

Pre-infusion

See where the component changes the first seconds of flow.

Use pre-infusion to smooth the beginning of the shot, not to compensate for careless preparation.

What people mean when they say "extraction"

Espresso Extraction

Translate parts into what changes in the cup.

Separate extraction from strength in your thinking. One asks how much was dissolved, the other how concentrated the drink feels.
