What it means
Regional classification systems that describe green coffee by size, defect count, altitude, preparation, or sorting level, depending on origin. Grades help buyers and sellers communicate expectations more consistently and affect contracts, roast planning, and how uniform a lot may behave before roasting. Different origins use grading language differently, and grades can be mistaken for flavour rankings — they are not.

Where this leads
Each one pushes this into the cup, compares it, or helps you act on it.
Which world you're in
Specialty Coffee
Then compare commercial grading with specialty standards.
Treat specialty as a quality ambition that still needs to be proven in the cup.
How coffee gets bought
Origin
Some grading language only makes sense in origin context.
Read origin labels with curiosity. The real detail comes from farm, varietal, process, and roast.

Micro Lots
Specific lots are not automatically better lots.
Read microlots as more specific, not automatically better.
Before roasting
Arabica
Widen out inside coffee without leaving the same problem space.
Read arabica as a clue, not a verdict. Species matters, but origin, varietal, processing, and roast still decide the cup.
